Vijay Hazare Trophy : Gujarat thrash Manipur by 152 runs

IMPHAL, Nov 12 : Manipur suffered a huge 152-run loss to Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022-23 Elite A opening match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi today.
Put in to bat first, Gujarat stacked a commanding total of 337 runs for 6 wickets thanks to PK Panchal's century knock and half centuries from BH Merai and SD Chauhan before  restricting Manipur to 185 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs.
PK Panchal clobbered 10 fours and 3 sixes on the way to his 136 run knock while BH Merai scored a 63-ball 56 and SD Chauhan starred with a 64-run quickfire.
Chirag J Gandhi was unbeaten on 33 (18) in their innings as Manipur's RK Rex emerged with the best bowling figures of 3 wickets for 59 runs in 9 overs.
Bishworjit Konthoujam was able to pick two wickets for 83 runs in his spell of 10 overs including Gujarat's highest run getter while Jotin Pheiroijam managed a wicket by offering 53 runs in 8 overs.
In the chase, Manipur started poorly losing Al Bashid within the first over on duck before his opening partner Nitesh went off for 3 after facing 10 deliveries.
After Manipur being reduced to 15 for 2, Langlonyamba (45) and Ngariyanbam Johnson (41) forged a remarkable 77-run third wicket partnership till Johnson was removed in the  2nd delivery of the 24th over by SA Desai who also set up dismissed Langlonyamba and Priyojit Kangabam (20) to complete his three wicket haul.
Later, Rex (31 off 55 balls) and Kishan Singha (18 not out off 17 balls) also contributed to help guide Manipur to 185 for 9.
Piyush Chawla also picked up two wickets as A Nagwaswalla, Kathan D Patel, Chiraj J Gandhi and CT Gaja shared a wicket each to keep Manipur batters on check.
Manipur will play Saurashtra at Jamia Millia Islamia ground, New Delhi in the next match tomorrow.
