MYFA decries marginalisation of Manipuri community

IMPHAL, Nov 14: The Manipuri Youth Front Assam (MYFA) has decried the alleged marginalisation and victimisation of Manipuri community by the Government of Assam in the neighbouring State.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, MYFA advisor Seram Herajit said that all the people who completed their education in Manipuri medium/language were totally sidelined after the Government of Assam issued a gazette notification on May 26, 2020 whereby candidates of all recruitment exams conducted under the Government of Assam are allowed to give these exams only in Assamese, Bengali and Bodo.
Thus Manipuri people settled in Assam who have been already recognised as an indigenous community of Assam have been denied job opportunities, he said.
He said that Manipuri people settled in Assam started learning in Manipuri medium starting from lower primary level in 1956.
Students were allowed to give their Class X exams in Manipuri medium in 1978. Subsequently, Manipuri Department was opened in 13 colleges under the Government of Assam in 1997. A separate Manipuri Department was also opened at Assam University, he said.
Before the gazette notification of May 26, 2020, candidates could give most of the recruitment exams in English language.
Now, Manipuris in Assam must learn either Assamese or Bengali or Bodo if they intend to seek employment under the Government of Assam, Herajit said.
It is not only the Assam Government jobs. People residing in Assam have to give recruitment exams of the Central Government in either Assamese, Bengali or Bodo, he continued.
Led by the MYFA, a number of protest demonstrations and mass movements had been undertaken urging the Government of Assam to safeguard the interests of Manipuri community and their mother language but the Government of Assam is still denying the Manipuri community all their rights and opportunities, he decried.
He then appealed to the CSOs of Manipur and the Government of Manipur to lend their support in protecting the interest of Assam’s Manipuri community.
He urged the Chief Minister of Manipur to write a letter to his Assam counterpart to the effect that Manipuri is adopted as another official language of Assam.
He said that MYFA has already submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren highlighting the same appeal.
The same memorandum further urged N Biren to take up the matter of introducing Meitei Mayek in Assam with his Assam counterpart, Herajit added.
