IMPHAL, Nov 16 : A team of the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has gone to Delhi today to meet Central Government leaders to highlight some of the issues including the matter of enlisting Meiteis/Meeteis in the ST category under the Indian Constitution.
A highly placed source informed that the ATSUM team comprises four members including its general secretary SR Andrea and they have sought appointments with the Union Tribal Affairs Minister and the Union Home Minister.
Notably, ATSUM has been opposing the demand for inclusion of Meiteis/Meeteis in the ST list.
Members of ATSUM even stormed the official quarters and residences of Hill Areas Committee (HAC) Chairman Dipu Gangmei, Transport Minister Khasim Vashum, Outer Manipur MP Dr S Lorho Pfoze and WRD Minister Awangbow Newmai at different locations of Imphal yesterday and submitted copies of a memorandum each which highlighted their stand (opposition against inclusion of Meiteis/Meeteis in the ST Category).
The source further informed that the matters/issues which the ATSUM leaders have been planning to apprise to the Central Government leaders also include the welfare of the tribal communities, among others.
