7 yrs RI for rapist

IMPHAL, Nov 17: A 24-year old man convicted of rape has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fie of Rs 10,000 under Section 4 of POCSO Act.
The sentence was passed by Salam Imocha, Special Judge, Fast Track Special Court Number 1 Manipur today.  
Potshangbam Johnson s/o Birendra of Keishamthong Hodam Leirak was convicted by the same Court on November 14 and he was produced before the Court from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa for sentence hearing today.
During the hearing, Special PP Meinam Bishambor submitted that the offence against children is on the rise in the society, so exemplary punishment may be awarded to the convict.
On the other hand, the defence counsel submitted that the convict is just 24 years old and a mason by occupation having a wife and two minor children and he is the sole bread earner.
The defence counsel prayed that the minimum sentence be awarded to the convict considering his age, his wife and children who are all dependent on him.  
The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submissions of the Special PP and the defence counsel, sentenced Potshangbam Johnson to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 7 years and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for committing sexual assault upon a minor girl on February 9, 2019.
In default of payment of the fine amount, the convict has to undergo simple imprisonment for another three months.
The detention period of one year and four months which the convict has already gone through during the investigation and trial of the case is also set off from the sentence.
The Court also directed the State Government to provide a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim from the Victim Compensation Fund or other schemes.
