Kpi Police begins crackdown on risky bus rides

KANGPOKPI, Nov 17 : People travelling on roof-tops of buses, including students with their school uniform, have become a common sight along National Highway 2.
In a blatant violation of traffic rules, private buses plying along NH-2 from Kangpokpi and Senapati District Headquarters were seen ferrying passengers on roof-tops while the department concerned remained mute spectators towards the violation of such traffic rules.
Commuters can often be spotted atop buses while the inaction of the authorities concerned has evoked sharp criticism from all quarters.
Considering the risky behaviours of passengers travelling on the roof-tops of buses, and the negligence of drivers and handymen of buses in allowing the passengers to sit on the roof-top, the Officer-in-Charge of Kangpokpi Police Station, Inspector Henminthang Kipgen began a crackdown on such passengers and buses employees today.
The police officer along with his team stopped buses and other vehicles where passengers were travelling on the roof-tops at the Kangpokpi Police Station gate this morning.
The police team led by Henminthang Kipgen was seen pulling down those passengers travelling on the roof-tops of the buses & other vehicles and parading them along with the vehicle's drivers and handymen.
The police officer warned the passengers not to travel again on the roof-tops while cautioning the drivers and handymen not to permit passengers to sit on the roof-tops.
He also made them aware of the frequent road accident and the risk of sitting on the roof-tops of vehicles.
Henminthang Kipgen further urged the school's authorities, bus owners and drivers association of Kangpokpi & Senapati and parents as well as passengers to avoid travelling on the roof-tops of buses and other vehicles to avoid many unwanted road accidents.
