Heavy rains to batter NE till May 15

GUWAHATI, May 12
While most parts of India have been enduring scorching heatwave conditions since the start of summer, the North Eastern States have remained wet since May began. Now, these conditions are getting further exacerbated due to Cyclone Asani, which has been ravaging India’s eastern coast all week.
Apart from directly impacting Andhra Pradesh (where it’s set to make a landfall) and its neighbouring States of Odisha and West Bengal, the cyclone’s presence is also fuelling the weather across North East India by pushing in strong, moisture-laden southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the wet spells are likely to continue over the North Eastern region till Sunday, May 15, at the least. The rainfall activity will be fairly widespread to widespread, effectively drenching a majority of the weather stations in the region.
Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, will also impact isolated locations across North East India in this forecast period. Accordingly, the region will be placed under a yellow watch, advising residents to ‘be updated’ on the weather situation.
The wet weather has kept the maximum temperatures across the region below average. However, daytime temperatures in Arunachal Pradesh — the North Eastern State farthest from the coast — may rise 2-3°C above normal on Thursday, the IMD has indicated.
Meanwhile, in spite of the active wet spell over the past week, all North Eastern States except for NMMT— which recorded normal rainfall levels — have experienced deficient precipitation since the beginning of May.
Between May 1 an 11, Assam and Meghalaya have witnessed the highest deficiency at 48% (recording 55.5 mm of rain against its normal of 106 mm). This is a surprising contrast, considering this subdivision has been experiencing the highest intensity of rains in the North East.  Times of India
