Sexual assault accused sent to jail

IMPHAL, May 22: An individual who was accused of sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl has been sent to jail while the victim was treated at JNIMS as she started bleeding profusely.
The accused who was remanded to judicial custody by the Judicial Magistrate, 1st Class, Imphal East on May 20 is identified as Yengkhom Meghachandra (58) of Waiton Mamang Leikai, Imphal East.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim’s family at Imphal East women police station on May 16, the accused was arrested on May 17 and he was remanded to police custody till May 20.
During interrogation by police, the accused reportedly confessed that he sexually assaulted the girl on February 21 and February 25 this year.
Both the victim and the accused were subjected to medical examination at JNIMS Forensic Medicine Department on May 19.
A team of the Women Action for Development (WAD) and some reporters went to the victim’s home yesterday and they found the victim bleeding profusely.
The team immediately rushed the victim to JNIMS and got her admitted to the hospital.
Earlier the victim aborted her pregnancy on May 14 at an unnamed clinic located at RIMS Road.
The victim’s mother narrated that she found her daughter ill and lying on bed on May 9 when she came back a brick firm where she has been working.
As the girl’s menstrual cycle had also stopped since two/three months back, the mother felt suspicious.
As such, she conducted a pregnancy test on her daughter using Velocit and the girl was found pregnant.
Later, the girl disclosed that she was sexually assaulted by Yengkhom Meghachandra. The girl’s pregnancy was confirmed at Sawombung Primary Health Centre and the doctor advised them to take ultrasonography, according to the mother. After the matter was apprised to the family of the accused, one daughter-in-law  of Y Meghachandra took the girl to the Sapam  X-Ray on May 14 and the girl was subjected to ultrasonography there.
“Without telling anything to me and my daughter, they took my daughter to an unnamed clinic and had her pregnancy aborted there”, the mother said.
