IMPHAL, Feb 1 Chief Minister N Biren Singh has extended greetings to the people of Manipur on the occasion of World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2.
In a statement, the Chief Minister asserted that the World Wetlands Day is a global awareness campaign launched to highlight the value of wetlands and marks the anniversary of the Convention of Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1972.
The Chief Minister pointed out the importance of wetlands saying that wetlands provide humans with the necessities of survival, including providing food and livelihood, sustaining biodiversity and storing carbon. He added that the Loktak lake is an ecological marvel of Manipur which is very important for the State's ecosystem and economy. Despite the State Government's impending master plan to rejuvenate the lake with a long-term approach, he stated that the onus of saving wetlands lies on the collective shoulder of the people and not just the Government.
