THOUBAL, Feb 1 : Strongly condemning the Government for ‘failing’ to trace the whereabouts of N Premananda, people of Thoubal stopped traffic on Imphal-Moreh road at Thoubal Wangmataba Okram area today.
Womenfolk and members of JAC formed in connection with Premananda’s missing case stopped all vehicles from plying except school/college vehicles, religious rituals and emergency services vehicles.
It may be noted that Ningombam Premananda is a VDF personnel posted at Chingkham Post in Thoubal and he hails from Thoubal Okram.
N Premananda had gone to Phaisi, a border village in Chandel district on a poppy destruction drive on January 16 and he has been missing since January 21.
He has a wife, Ningombam ongbi Bomita and two children.
Meanwhile, people and volunteers of Youth Sporting Club, Khundongbam Leikai, Kiyam Siphai also supported the agitation and enforced bandhs at many places inside Thoubal. Police personnel were deployed at Thoubal to control and avoid unwanted incidents. Additional SP (Ops) Okramcha Wangkhomba pacified the protestors and encouraged the JAC to submit their grievances to the Chief Minister. Even though a team of the JAC went to meet Chief Minister N Biren Singh, they couldn’t meet him in person. Instead the team met Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam at his office in the presence of Khangabok AC MLA O Sujakumar and Thoubal district Superintendent of Police Jogeshchandra Haobijam. During the meeting, the parties reached an agreement and the indefinite bandh at Thoubal was suspended. JAC convenor N Wanglen said they appealed to the Work Minister to use all available force to use in the search for Premananda. The Minister agreed to deploy additional forces from February 2 and he asked the JAC to give the Government three days to trace Premananda. If the Government and its security agencies fail to find clues and trace the whereabouts of Premananda by February 5, the JAC will hold a public meeting on the next day and decide future course of action, he added.
