IMPHAL, Feb 2 : VDF personnel should not be sent on poppy destruction drives beyond their home district, said All Manipur VDF Welfare Association today. There are around 10,050 Village Defence Force personnel in Manipur and as per VDF recruitment rule, they are to serve/deploy at their respective home districts only.
Moreover the VDF personnel have not been life security and they are not given the same privileges as given to State police and MR personnel, it said in a statement. Mentioning that one of its personnel N Premananda has been missing without any trace, the association said, unless the VDF personnel are given all the privileges as given to State police personnel, they should not be deployed for poppy destruction drives outside their home respective district. If VDF personnel are found ordered to join poppy destruction drives beyond their respective home district, then the State Government and the SP concerned should take responsibility for any eventualities. This decision was taken during a meeting of the central committee and leaders of VDF personnel in 16 districts yesterday at Imphal, the association said.
If the VDF personnel are given the privileges they seek, they may be deployed all over India to fight crimes, it added.
