IMPHAL, Mar 30: Police today cracked down on a group of Congress workers who were staging a protest demonstration against disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
A protest rally organised by MPCC Seva Dal started from Congress Bhavan, BT road this evening and the protesters marched towards the western gate of the Kangla.
A team of Imphal West district police who anticipated the protest guarded the protesters along their route.
On reaching the western gate of the Kangla, the Congress workers brought out a banner embossed with the words “Democracy in Danger”. They also held lighted candles and stood in rows.
As MPCC vice-president L Tilotama started speaking to the media, a strong police team tried to drive away the protesters.
The protesters responded by shouting slogans like “Hail Congress”, “Hail Rahul Gandhi”, “Down BJP’, “Down Modi, Down Adani” etc.
As the police drove the protesters till the gate of the Congress Bhavan, a tense standoff erupted there.
Nonetheless, police brought the situation under control by hurling a tear gas shell.
As some Seva Dal members sustained injuries and collapsed in the confrontation with police and as a result of the effects of the tear gas shell, they were taken to a nearby hospital.
MPCC vice-president L Tilotama said that the BJP has been directly challenging the very foundation of democracy by forcibly disqualifying Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha.
She said that they were taking out a democratic and silent rally against disqualification of Rahul Gandhi but it is a matter of grave concern that Manipur Police  cracked down upon the peaceful protesters with full force.
