Sulphur deficiency

Imphal, Mar 31 : The Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal has observed that there is major sulphur deficiency in soil available in Manipur due to non maintenance of micronutrient in agricultural practices.
Addressing the opening ceremony of a two-day Farmers' Training Programme at the conference hall of CAU at Iroisemba today, Professor Indira Sarangthem of the varsity said that about 80 per cent of the total agricultural land in Manipur has sulphur deficiency problems.
The training programme is being held under the theme “Impact of sulphur, boron, zinc and molybdenum on soyabean, rapeseed, blackgram, chickpea, groundnut, tomato, onion and potato.”
At the launch function, Indira continued that the agricultural land in Imphal East has the highest sulphur deficiency figure.
The Professor said that micronutrients such as sulphur, zinc and boron not only improve soil health but they are also beneficial to humans. Saying that the University learnt about the sulphur deficiency after testing soil collected from different parts of the State, Indira appealed to all the farmers to give importance on maintaining micronutrient of the soil as it plays important roles in photosynthesis. CAU Directorate of Extension Education Director Professor Ph Ranjit Sharma; Professor U Chaoba Singh of Department of Horticulture and Professor L Nabachandra Singh of Department of Horticulture also attended the programme.
Professor Ranjit also appealed to the farmers to minimise the risk of plant infestations by taking advice from experts while Professor Ibohal said that the rate at which farmers implement the knowledge they gained from training programmes is very low .
