Manipur has set up population commission to identify illegal immigrants : CM House to house survey on the card

Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday said the State has constituted a Population Commission to identify “illegal immigrants” in the border State. “We’ve already constituted a Population Commission… We’ve appointed the members,” Singh said in response to questions at a press conference today.
“Now through this, we’re going to identify who’s who in the State. We’ll do it.”
Asked about the demand to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, Singh said: “NRC is doing this in Assam as per Supreme Court directive. But if (we) want to do NRC, we (Manipur) alone cannot do it. We need the approval of the Central Government.”
He did not specify if the State proposed to send a proposal to the Centre.
The Chief Minister stressed that a house-to-house survey will be conducted soon to identify the illegal immigrants.
Manipur was the fourth State after Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram where the Inner Line Permit regime was introduced. The objective of the ILP system is to prevent the settlement of other Indian Nationals in the States that come under it to protect the indigenous population.
Since its introduction, 3,52,311 permits including 3,17,715 temporary permits have been issued till December last year.
Responding to a question on the number of temporary shelter homes to be set up for Myanmar Nationals who seek refuge in the State due to the ongoing violence in the neighbouring country, Biren Singh said the Cabinet sub-committee formed to monitor illegal immigrants in the State was inspecting the situation in Tengnoupal and Chandel districts. “The team will be going for a survey in Churachandpur tomorrow. Its report will be finalised once the ongoing surveys are completed,” he said. On March 26, the Cabinet Sub-committee chairman Letpao Haokip, who is also the State’s Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister along with Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai and Education Minister Th Basanta Singh inspected areas at Haolenphai village of Tengnoupal district for setting up of temporary shelter home for illegal immigrants followed by another similar visit at Gamphajol village in Chandel district on March 29 for the same purpose.
