Thanil condoled

IMPHAL, Mar 31 : The staff of Manipur State Kala Akademi led by secretary L Kishworjit Singh have condoled the sudden demise of noted Pung Guru Padmashree Sougaijam Thanil Singh  today.
As per a statement, the gathering also observed a one-minute silence in honour of the departed soul.
 Padmashree Sougaijam Thanil Singh was born in 1946 at Kakching Wairi and was a highly acclaimed exponent and guru of Nata Sankirtana Pung.
He was widely respected not only for his excellence and eminence in this field but also for his profound knowledge and creativity.
As a scholar, he wrote five books on different aspects of Nata Sankirtana. He also created manifold fusions of Pung Cholom and Kartal Cholom,  the statement added.
The late Sougaijam Thanil Singh also served as the Pradhan Guru of Jawaharlal Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal and retired from service as its officiating director. His long and illustrious career had been adorned with many prestigious honours such as Padmashree Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Manipur State Kala Akademi Award etc. Recently, on March 13 he was bestowed with Manipur State Kala Akademi Fellow, the statement informed.
Manipur State Kala Akademi maintained that his demise has created a big void in the world of Manipuri culture, especially in the field of Nata Sankirtana.
Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Naharol Sahitya Premee Samiti, Imphal and the Moibung Loishang Manipur have also extended their deepest condolences at the passing of the eminent guru of Nata Sankirtana Pung and offered prayers for the departed soul to rest in peace.
