IMPHAL, Apr 14: Even as 31 persons remain missing amid the ongoing conflict, trace them, and if they are dead, return their bodies with dignity, said their families to Union Home Minister Amit Shah today.
In a representation addressed to Amit Shah, the families of the missing persons said while they are holding on to the hope that their loved ones are alive, they want closure in case they are dead.
About 31 persons have gone missing since May 3, 2023.
"The families of these missing persons still hold onto hope that their loved ones are alive. If not alive, they hope that their bodies can be recovered for closure and proper mourning," said the representation.
The families have reported these disappearances to the police authorities, and FIRs have been registered. However, till date, the families have no idea about the progress of the investigations, and they are unaware of the steps taken by the authorities concerned.
The families are living in extreme misery as no visible action has been taken by the State authorities to trace the whereabouts of the 31 missing persons, it said.
To ameliorate the suffering of the families who are parents, wives, or kith and kin of the missing persons, tracing the remains or whereabouts of the missing persons is a must. This allows them to perform the last rites, bring closure, and enable the perpetrators to be brought to justice, it said.
Further, if the persons are untraceable, there is an immediate requirement for the authorities concerned to declare the missing persons as untraceable and issue certificates accordingly, it added. Some of the missing persons are Government employees, but so far, no benefits, either regular salary or retirement benefits have been extended due to the non-completion of the investigation. The families who are dependent on them have been put to untold miseries, it said.
The families then urged the Union Home Minister to direct the State and Central authorities to trace the missing persons.
In case they are confirmed deceased, then direct the State and Central authorities to retrieve the remains. The bodies should be returned with dignity, said the families.
The representation further urged the Union Home Minister to pass any other directions as he deems fit and proper for the benefit of the families of the missing persons as per law.
