Detained by police for 35 hrs for criticising UHM's visit, claims activist

IMPHAL, Apr 16: Transgender activist Malem Thongam today said she was allegedly detained by the police for around 35 hours for criticising Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Manipur.
At Manipur Press Club, Imphal, Malem said she had released a statement to the media on April 13 criticising and condemning the scheduled visit of the Union Home Minister on April 15.
On April 14 at around 7.45 am, a large number of police personnel came and picked her up from her house at Maiba Khul Mayai Leikai, she said.
She was taken to Heingang police station and then released at around 8 pm of the same day. Soon after the release, she was further detained by the City police at their station till 6 pm of April 15. At around 6 pm, after Amit Shah had left Manipur, an FIR was registered at the station and she was released, said Malem.
Malem said her alleged detention by the police was a deliberate attempt to gag dissenting voices of the people against those who are destroying democracy.
She further accused the State and the Central Government of suppressing the voice of the people, instead of trying to resolve the nearly a year old crisis.
"When even the Chief Minister himself can't even travel beyond Sekmai, he has claimed that peace has been restored," Malem said, adding the Government should work towards bringing peace with sincerity. Commenting on the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, Malem urged people to denounce use of money and muscle power.
