IMPHAL, Apr 26 : Maintaining momentum to their renewed offensive since the last couple of days, heavily armed militants launched a fierce attack from Sinam Kom Tabi hill range toward Meitei villages located in the periphery of Imphal East district today.
At around 4.45 pm today, Kuki militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, numbering around 30 came down from the nearby hill range up to Sinam Kom village and attacked Meitei villages located in the periphery by opening a barrage of heavy fire.
In self-defence, village volunteers fired back some rounds of bullets and prevented the Kuki militants from advancing further toward the Meitei villages, sources said.
On receiving information about the attack, security personnel rushed to the spot and assessed the situation.
The heavy gunfight lasted for around 30 minutes before Kuki militants fled from the spot toward the nearby hill range.
Yet, intermittent exchange of fire between the Kuki militants and village volunteers was going on till the time of filing this  report.
There is no report of any injury on the side of the village volunteers. Village volunteers and security personnel have been maintaining a strict vigil in the foothills to defend the Meitei villages from possible attacks by Kuki militants, said the sources.
