IMPHAL, Nov 29 : Residents of Leitanpokpi staged a sit-in protest today against the ongoing road construction at Leitanpokpi Maning Uyuk Ching by some Kukis.
The protesters vowed to continue their agitation until the President’s Rule administration halts the road construction work.
As soon as the protest began, Central and State security forces were deployed and tight security arrangements were made in the area.
Later, Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar, Imphal East Assistant Commissioner N Suran, Sagolmang SDC, along with senior police and civil officials, rushed to the spot and held discussions with the protesters.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines, MLA Th  Lokeshwar stated that the hill at Leitangpokpi was legally purchased by the residents of Leitanpokpi from former Makeng Dolaithabi Pradhan Deutong Haokip for the purpose of collecting firewood and other community uses.
He said that there is an official document for the transaction.
Stating that the locals of Leitanpokpi are the owners of the Uyok Ching, he urged the  Governor to intervene and stop the road construction work by some Kukis as the same is against the interest of the Leitanpokpi people.
President of Young Sporting Club, Leitanpokpi W Naoba told reporters that on November 25 they had appealed to the Government demanding an immediate halt to the road construction within three days.
"Since no action has been taken by the authorities even after the deadline, we have now decided to submit a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, seeking his urgent intervention to stop the construction," Naoba said.
