Imphal, Nov 30: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying at the Manipur Trade and Commerce Centre relief camp at Lamboi-khongnangkhong staged a protest demonstration this afternoon in front of the Western Gate of Kangla Fort against the Sangai Festival.
Around 1.30 pm, a large group of IDPs gathered at the Kangla Western Gate carrying placards and raising slogans such as : “No Sangai Festival at this time”, “We strongly oppose Mani-pur Sangai Festival”, “Free movement first, Sangai Festival later”, and “Resettle us first, then hold Sangai Festival” among others.
When the protesters attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan, they were intercepted by a heavy deployment of security personnel who stopped their march and directed them to disperse.
The IDPs were then forced to turn back towards BT Flyover, where they staged a brief sit-in protest on the flyover, temporarily disrupting normal traffic movement.
Later, the protesters proceeded to Uripok Achom Leikai and concluded the agitation with a public meeting at the Uripok Achom Leikai Community Hall.
The demonstrators accused the Government of insensitivity for organising a festival while thousands of displaced families continue to live in relief camps.
