Kuki militants open indiscriminate firing

IMPHAL, Dec 10: On the eve of President Droupadi Murmu’s maiden visit to the State, suspected Kuki militants fired several rounds of bullets in Khamenlok area, Imphal East under Sagolmang police station.
The firing took place on December 9 night even as security measures have been beefed up in and around Imphal in view of President Droupadi Murmu’s two-day visit to the State.
Sources said that sounds of gunshots were heard by both State security personnel as well as Central forces  deployed in the Sagolmang and foothill areas.
The sounds of gunshots came from the direction of a Kuki inhabited area of Khamenlok.
The firing lasted for some minutes and around 70 rounds were fired by the suspected Kuki militants.
The sources said that the Kuki militants might have fired the bullets in their camp located in the nearby area.
Meanwhile, a combined team of BSF, IRB, Yaingangpokpi Police and Special Commando Unit, Khabeisoi carried out a cordon and search operation at Yaingangpokpi Bazar this morning.
During the cordon and search operation carried out  as a part of enhanced security measures taken up by the State in view of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit, more than 50 individuals were verified but no one was detained.
On the other hand, beautification and renovation works of roads, road medians and the Nupi Lan complex are going on in full swing.
Welcome gates are being erected on different roads leading to Nupi Lan complex and Lok Bhavan from Imphal Airport.
