IMPHAL, Dec 9: In a historic first in Manipur, Orthopaedics Department of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has successfully conducted an AI navigated total knee replacement surgery.
The "first of its kind" AI navigated surgery in the State was led by Dr Angamba Heisnam, Orthopaedic and Joint Replace- ment Specialist of JNIMS Hospital on December 4.
The surgery was conducted on a 60-year-old woman from Bashikhong who was diagnosed with a severe Grade 4 Osteoarthritis of the knee.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It happens when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time.
A specialist trained in AI Navigation & Robotic Joint Replacement at the Wrigh-tington Hospital, United Kingdom, Dr Angamba Heisnam said the new technology is "precision and accuracy" driven.
This AI integrated new technology can perform complex revision knee surgery with high precision and accuracy, and it significantly improves the chance of early recovery and mobility, Dr Angamba said.
The surgery was conducted on December 4 and the patient was discharged only about 2-3 days later on December 7, he said.
The patient recovered quickly. She was able to walk pain-free with some support, he added.
Dr Angamba said the AI navigated surgery also avoids post-surgery complications.
The doctor thanked the entire team including the JNIMS Anaesthesia crew for ensuring smooth conduct of the surgery.
Significantly, this is not the first time the Orthopaedics Department of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has scripted history.
The department was first to conduct total knee replacement in Manipur in 2017.
In 2023, the department successfully conducted a Megaprosthesis of the knee joint on an osteosarcoma (bone cancer) patient.
