IMPHAL, Dec 11 : Dr Pardeshi Lamabam, former convenor of the Committee on Human Rights (COHR), has asserted that human rights violations persist in Manipur despite the safeguards provided by the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and the Indian Constitution.
As in other places, the Federal Students' Organisation, Kangleipak (FESOK) observed the International Human Rights Day at Classic Hotel at North AOC, yesterday.
Held under the theme "Our Everyday Essentials", the programme was presided by FESOK president Amarjit Kangujam.
Speaking at the event as a resource person, Dr Pardeshi claimed that India is also involved in undermining human rights in Manipur through excessive use of force and the continued imposition of draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Power Act.
Stating that human rights activists and organisations have lodged several complaints regarding human rights violations in Manipur at Geneva, he added that the United Nations, however, has taken no action so far.
Dr Pardeshi also stated that normalcy has not yet been restored in Manipur, despite the State being under President's Rule.
He said that those in power continue to act without any accountability in Manipur.
Delivering the welcome address, FESOK vice president Ph Lalit said that International Human Rights Day is observed annually on December 10 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948.
He said that FESOK has also been observing the day to advocate safeguarding human rights and to ensure that people can live with dignity.
Highlighting the need to raise awareness about safeguarding human rights, Lalit stated that people in Manipur continue to live under oppression, deprived of their basic rights.
Lalit also cited the plight of internally displaced people (IDPs), who he said have been denied their fundamental human rights.
The Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of movement, yet the Meiteis have been cut off from the highways, he said  and  asked who is responsible for violating these basic human rights ?
Associate Professor Dr Ch Tomba of Department of  Teacher Education of Manipur University; Assistant Professor Dr L Mohindro of Department of Human Rights of SK Women's College and Assistant Professor Dr Ningombam  Shreema of Department of Political Science of L Sanoi College  also spoke at the event as resource persons.
