The gathering offered floral tributes to honour the brave Manipuri women who fought against the British soldiers in the Nupi Lan.
Addressing the gathering, L Nganbi recalled the Jiribam massacre wherein six people, three children and three women, were mercilessly killed.
Remembering the silence of Indian Ministers when this incident came to light, she expressed discontent with President Droupadi Murmu's visit to the State. However, it is a matter of pride for Manipur that the President came to the State to attend the Nupi Lan observation and offered her respects to the deceased Manipuri mothers who stood against the British colonial empire for truth.
On her return to Delhi, she expressed hope that the President will give an accurate account of the situation in Manipur to the Centre and the concerned Ministers and give directions to carry out the necessary discussions to improve the situation.
Meanwhile, P Sobita, convenor, 86th Nupi Lan Observation Committee stated that hosting the Nupi Lan observance numerous times will hold no meaning if people fail to emulate the mindset, resilience, bravery and firm stance against oppressive forces displayed by the Manipuri mothers of that time. In 1939, brave Manipuri women brought the mighty British, who held the economic reins of the land and violated the people's rights, to its knees on December 12, said S Memcha, president, Poirei Leimarol. "The valour displayed by the ancestors of that period has been a source of pride for subsequent generations of Manipur", she added.
