IMPHAL, Dec 13: A  multi-storeyed mechanized rotary parking system being con-structed at Nagamapal (opposite to Kangjabi Leirak Machin) is likely to be inaugurated in January 2026.
Construction of the rotary parking lot which will have space for 42 cars is going on in full swing.
Talking to this reporter, Imphal Smart City Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and former MAHUD Director Thingbaijam Hari-kumar said that the multi-storeyed mechanized rotary parking system was constructed with a view to reduce traffic congestion in Imphal city at least to some extent.
Harikumar said that construction of the rotary park- ing system started six months back by boring piles and the structure is a prefabricated one fastened with nuts and bolts.
The parking system will have three units, each with a capacity of accommodating 14 cars, he said, adding that the construction work is nearing completion.
In the next phase, a parking lot for two-wheelers will be constructed just beside the mechanized rotary parking system, Harikumar said.
He said that one unit of the two-wheeler parking lot    will have a capacity of accommodating 72 vehicles.
Like the four wheeler parking lot, the two-wheeler parking lot will also be constructed under the Imphal Smart city Mission, the CEO said.
A similar mechanized parking system will be constructed at Nagamapal to the north of Kasturi Bridge. The project was delayed due to objections from the local people but the matter is likely to be resolved soon, he said.
The multi-storeyed parking lot is being constructed   by Kolkata based LT Limited and as per the project agreement, the company will be responsible for maintenance and operation of the parking lot for a period of five years, Harikumar said.
The company will make necessary repairs if there is any problem to the parking system during the first five years, he said and added that the cost of the mechanized parking system is Rs 8 crore. At first, the mechanized parking lot was planned at the eastern side of the temporary market near Irabot Bhavan but it was shifted to Nagamapal following strong objections from shopkeepers and others.
In the meantime, development of a parking lot in the basement of Ima Keithel No 1 (Ima Leimarel Shidabi Keithel) has been completed. This parking space will be able to accommodate 60 cars.
However, there are problems in converting the basements of Ima Keithel No 2 and No 3 as car parking lots because the pillars grew much larger after they were retrofitted following the strong earthquake of 2016, Harikumar said.
As such, the basements of Ima Keithel No 2 and No 3 have been developed as parking lots for two-wheelers and their combined capacity is 600 vehicles, he said. Once these parking lots are commissioned, traffic congestion at BT Road, Shamu Makhong and around the three Ima Keithels will ease considerably, he said.
