IMPHAL, Dec 13 : A sit-in protest was staged today at Modern College's Gate No 3, Porompat, Imphal East with protesters alleging that an individual has encroached upon college land.
The protest demonstration organized by the Mo- dern College Students' Union, Modern College Alum- ni Association, and Modern College Teachers' Association, saw protesters holding placards with slogans such as "Land for students, not for buildings," "No encroachment, save college campus," "Safeguard college land for future gene- rations," "We stand united against encroachment," and "Modern College campus is not a business ground," among others. Speaking to the media, Martin Wairokpam, a college student, stated that an individual has started ground levelling on the college campus adjacent to the gate no 3 by acquiring a land patta. Questioning how land allotment had been granted to someone within the college campus, he stated that no individual would be allowed to forcibly take college land.
He said that the encroached land measures around one sangam (a local unit of measuring land).
Saying that they have closed Gate no 3 from today, he added that no individual should carry out any activity that could result in the college losing its land.
Konsam Langamba, an alumnus of the college, stated that they discovered land had been allotted to five individuals inside the college campus in 2021.
Of the five, four have withdrawn, but one individual is attempting to forcibly take the college land, he claimed, and urged the individual to reconsider his stance.
Saying that not an inch of the college land should be given to anyone, he urged the Land Resources Department to cancel the land allotment within the college campus. "Don't let the students waste their valuable time protesting such issues", he added.
