IMPHAL, Dec 15 : Many houses and household plots owned by Kukis at Imphal who have fled following the May 3, 2023 violence are being allegedly bought by some Muslims.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Indo-Myanmar Workers Forum president Ningthoukhongjam Phulin-dro said that Meitei IDPs who are residing in Kuki houses of New Lambulane, Nongpok Ingkhol (revenue village no 26A) are being told to leave the houses on the ground that the same houses/plots have been bought allegedly by Muslims.
Notably Phulindro himself is an IDP from Moreh and he is currently taking refuge at New Checkon.
He said that posters embossed with the word ‘Muslim’ have been pasted at the gates of the houses allegedly bought by Muslims.
Phulindro said that there is a Government order which prohibits sale of lands/plots owned by both displaced Kukis and Meiteis.
Once the rehabilitation and resettlement measures are implemented successfully, displaced Kukis will have to come back to Imphal but they will have no place at Imphal if all their houses/plots are brought and taken over by Muslims, he said.
In such a scenario, Meiteis displaced from Churachandpur, Moreh etc will not be able to go back to their native villages.
When Kukis have no place at Imphal, and Meiteis cannot go back to Churachandpur and Moreh, it will be nothing short of facilitating the Kukis’ demand for Separate Administration, Phulindro said before seeking immediate attention of both the Central and State Governments.
While IDPs have been protesting for resettlement at their native villages, Muslims have been secretly buying houses and household plots owned by displaced Kukis.
Moreover, some men came and told the Meitei IDPs who are taking temporary refuge in houses owned by displaced Kukis to leave the houses.
On being enquired whether they were Pangals, those men said they were Muslims, he said. He also sought immediate attention of the Government and CSOs into the matter.
