IMPHAL, Dec 16: Questioning the Government’s commitment to resettlement of IDPs, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has asserted that people will lose faith and trust in the Government if it fails to fulfil its assurance of resettling the IDPs by the end of December 2025.
Joining the IDPs who have been staging a sit-in-protest at Lamboikhongnangkhong since December 1 demanding resettlement within the current month, COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba said that they have been submitting memorandums/reminders to the Governor and the Chief Secretary everyday since December 1 reminding the Government of its own commitment to resettle the IDPs within the current month but there has been no proper response till date.
With the Government not giving any response to the series of memoranda/reminders so far, it remains a big question whether the Government is implementing any resettlement measures or not at all, he said.
After spending nights at other relief camps, members of COCOMI, its women wing and representatives of IDP committees spent December 15 night at Moirang College relief camp and discussed at length the hardships being endured by displaced families, Athouba said.
In order to feel and get first hand experience of the hardships endured by IDPs for the past two years and a half, administrative officers detailed for resettlement works need to spend at least one night at relief camps, he said.
He said that displaced people from Torbung, Waikhurok, Phougakchao Ikhai, Napet and Tangjeng have been taking refuge at the Moirang College relief camp.
On the claim circulated on social media that the people of Torbung have started resettling at their native village, a ground assessment was done and it was found that preparations have begun for resettlement but no resettlement has begun.
Nonetheless, some people of Phoubakchao Mamang Leikai have started resettling at their village, he said.
There were indications that security arrangements have been initiated for resettlement at Torbung, he said.
The COCOMI convenor said that they would hold a meeting with Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh on the many issues of IDPs today.
He said that they would appeal to the Security Advisor to take up additional security measures at Torbung.
Athouba said that they also visited the relief camp opened near Ithai Barrage yesterday.
He said that they talked with the IDPs and discussed resettlement of IDPs of Ithai area where the situation is  good enough for resettlement.
Athouba said that they talked with the Imphal East Deputy Commissioner and urged proper resettlement of displaced people from Dolaithabi, Litanpokpi, Itham etc at the earliest.
It appeared that the district administration is still unable to resettle the displaced people of these villages due to security lapses, he remarked.
Even though the Government has initiated a resettlement process at a few places, it is far from being satisfactory. As such, the sit-in-protest will go on, he said.
