IMPHAL, Dec 16 : The State level launching programme of National Newborn Week 2025-26 was held today at the NHM conference hall of Directorate of Health Services at Lamphelpat.
The programme is being organised by the Directorate of Health Services and the State Health Society, NHM, Manipur under the theme "Newborn Safety : Every Touch, Every Time, Every Baby."
Addressing the function as chief guest, Health Director Dr N Hemantakumar said that National Newborn Week aims to reduce the mortality rate of children under the age of five.
He noted that Manipur currently has the lowest infant mortality rate in the country, at 3 per 1,000 births.
The practice of using hot water during childbirth in the past was effective in preventing infections, he said.
Saying that most people nowadays prefer hospital deliveries due to the better care provided by modern medical practices, Dr  Hemantakumar emphasised the importance of timely immunization to ensure children grow up healthy.
He also appealed to everyone to give newborns the utmost care.
State Mission Director of NHM  Dr M Dinesh and Family Welfare Director Dr N Bino were the president and guest of honour.
Dr Dinesh stated that the Government operates 68 delivery points to minimize infant mortality as much as possible.
However, he noted that there are only five hospitals with skilled nursing units and three hospitals with Newborn Sterilization Units in the State.
