MOIRANG, Dec 18: Meiragi Mangal on Wednesday alleged that Tiddim road has increasingly become a major route for transportation of illicit drugs, raising serious concerns over public safety and social well-being.
Addressing a press conference held at Tronglaobi, Meiragi Mangal member Kongkham Kunjeshori, alleged that various kinds of illegal drugs are being transported from Churachandpur to the valley areas through Tiddim road. She claimed that these drugs are being purchased and consumed by the Meiteis from the valley by paying high amounts, which, she claimed, has enabled Kuki militants to acquire weapons and carry  out the violent campaign against Meitei communities.
Kunjeshori stated that members of Meiragi Mangal have repeatedly suspected frequent drug movement along Tiddim road.
She cited an incident on December 16 when volunteers attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle, which allegedly refused to comply and fled. During the chase, the occupants reportedly pushed down four to five carton boxes at Tronglaobi Awang in an attempt to slow down the pursuing vehicle before fleeing.
She said that the discarded carton boxes were later checked and found to contain tobacco products, which were subsequently disposed of by setting them on fire.
Kunjeshori alleged that the act of discarding the cartons suggested that the suspects considered the contents expendable, raising fears that more expensive and harmful drugs might be transported along the route, posing a serious threat to society.
She further alleged that while commuters travelling along Tiddim road towards Phougakchao Ikhai are subjected to strict frisking and scrutiny by security personnel, illicit drugs continue to pass through the same route. She questioned how such contraband could move freely despite heavy security checks, terming the situation questionable.
Appealing to the public, she urged the people of the State to stay away from drugs, such drugs, warning that such substances are harmful and have a damaing impact on society.
