Poppy plantation destroyed

UKHRUL, Dec 18 : A combined team of the Ukhrul Police and security forces on Thursday destroyed 119 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in the district on the third day of the phase-2 poppy destruction drive, police sources said.
As per the sources, as many as 24 huts used by poppy cultivators were also burnt by the combined team.
The combined team conducted operations at two different locations – LM and Yaolen Chepu and Lamlai Chingphei Area. In the LM Block, a total of 52 acres were destroyed and 12 huts used by poppy cultivators were burnt by a combined team comprising District Police, 6MR, the Forest Department, and 18 Assam Rifles, under the command of SDPO Ukhrul, the sources said.
In Yaolen Chepu and Lamlai Chingphei Area, a combined team comprising District Police, BSF, the Forest Department, 4 Mahar Regiment, NCB and NAB, under the command of SDPO Jessami destroyed a total of 67 acres and burnt 12 huts used by poppy cultivators.
Police sources said that FIR cases will be registered accordingly for both locations. The two teams will continue the destruction drive through Saturday, the sources added.
