‘Delhi meet centred on restoring peace’

IMPHAL, Dec 19 : Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that the recent meeting convened by the BJP's high command on December 14 explored ways to restore normalcy in Manipur and facilitate the return of all party MLAs to the State Assembly.
He returned to Imphal this evening.
It is reported that some BJP MLAs, including the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Satyabrata, were on the same flight as Biren, but they remained inside for a long time, even after Biren had left.
Speaking to the media at Imphal Airport, Biren claimed that Meitei and Kuki MLAs, along with civil society organisations (CSOs), have been holding meetings to resolve the crisis in Manipur.
He reiterated that the recent meeting convened at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi was an important step toward addressing the situation in Manipur.
The meeting which was attended by the majority of party MLAs and the BJP's high command focused on working together for communal harmony and prioritising development in Manipur, the Heingang AC MLA said.
He said that the meeting was attended by 34 out of 37 party MLAs from the Meitei, Kuki, Naga, and Muslim communities.
Biren added that one BJP MLA could not attend due to the death of his mother-in-law, while the remaining two were absent for medical reasons.
Regarding the fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border, Biren said that he met with the Border Management Secretary, who arrived in Manipur today.
He added that the Border Management Secretary will inspect the area where the border fence was breached recently.
When asked about the recent attack on civilians by heavily armed miscreants at Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai, the MLA expressed confidence that the Government of India will take steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in future.
