IMPHAL, Dec 23: With waste disposal through trucks and vans affected by the ongoing construction work on the road leading from Iroisemba to the Solid Waste Treatment Plant, Lamdeng, garbage and waste materials have been piling up in Imphal city.
Mounds of garbage and waste materials are growing bigger and bigger in almost every part of Imphal city including the base of BT Road’s footbridge and Thangal Keithel’s Mall Road. Apart from these mounds, garbage and waste materials have been scattered in many parts of the city.
As the road leading from Iroisemba to Lamdeng is being constructed with cement concrete, garbage trucks are taking a detour through Lamsang.
There is an urgent need to raise the number of garbage transfer stations where garbage and waste materials are piled up and collected as long as the garbage trucks are taking the detour.
With Khwairamband Keithel and surrounding areas generating tonnes of garbage and waste materials everyday, the mound of garbage piled up at the transfer station at Nagamapal has grown quite big.
At the same time, many shopkeepers of both Thangal Keithel and Paona Keithel as well as vendors of Khwairamband Keithel including street vendors have not been disposing waste materials at proper places.
There is no report of police pulling up anyone for disposing waste materials at improper places.
Some senior citizens told The Sangai Express that the majority of the people have little sense of disposing waste materials at proper places.
Shopkeepers and customers alike have been throwing away wrappers, covers, packages etc of articles and eatable items on roads and public places, they said.
Shopkeepers have been disposing of waste materials at nearby places.
Waste materials and garbage strewn by shopkeepers and public everyday are being swept and collected by the staff of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).
People need to understand that materials which many feel reluctant to touch are being handled and cleaned by IMC staff, the senior citizens said.
Appreciating the development works being done under the Imphal Smart City Project, the senior citizens asserted that the real change or development must be brought by the citizens.
They appealed to all citizens to cultivate a healthy habit of disposing of waste materials and garbage at proper places.
Police too need to pull up those people who bring out waste materials from their homes and shops and dispose of them at public or improper places.
At the same time, the authorities concerned must take up steps to enhance collection and disposal of garbage and waste materials, the senior citizens added.
