Throwing traffic movement into jeopardy Man made traffic snarls

Getting greeted first thing in the morning by the newspapers published from Imphal may not exactly be refreshing to the eyes and minds, but it does give ample opportunities to everyone to take one look at the reality, swallow hard and think what one can do to make things a little better. So it was that readers of The Sangai Express were greeted by two news with the screaming headlines, ‘Results declaration of LFS bring traffic to a standstill’ and ‘Garbage piles up at Imphal city.’ Traffic snarls and getting caught in the traffic is no longer a novelty in Imphal today, but there are times when the reality says that some of the traffic madness are avoidable, really avoidable. The report on the traffic snarl on the Airport road, complete with two pictures should tell a very significant story, a story that says nothing good of the overall mentality of the people. Rows and rows of cars parked, leaving just a little space to serve as some sort of a by pass for other vehicles to move through and it was this that was witnessed in all its ‘glory’ on the Airport road just in front of well known institute, Little Flower School. Declaration of the exam results from Nursery to Class IX was the reason why parents and guardians had made a beeline near the school gate, throwing normal vehicular movement out of gear. One can imagine the rush of adrenaline in the young students who had appeared for the exams, with some eagerly awaiting the results while there could be others who may have dreaded the result declaration day-all part of life’s journey during the phase of student days, but the traffic snarl that was witnessed outside should not have been a part of the life of a student. And written in bold in the vehicles parked outside and near the school, reflected the mentality of the people as well as the failure of the school authority to anticipate anything that could jeopardise traffic movement on an otherwise extremely important road route. It defies logic to see the cars parked so haphazardly, in rows just  because parents and elders of the family who had come to take the results, did not want to walk a few distance and get their ‘polished shoes’ and slickly oiled and combed hair dirty ! If the early birds had occupied the areas where the cars can be parked, why not move a little away and park one’s car there ? Why park it just next to the car already parked there ? The roadside, where cars are usually parked, is not the personal heirloom of anyone, much less the fiefdom of the slickly dressed parents and guardians of the students who happen to study at Little Flower School. On the other hand, it was also surprising that the school had not made any arrangement to monitor the parking of the vehicles. Or was it a case of the school not expecting to see so many parents turning up to get the results of their children ?
As a man stuck in the traffic snarl put it, where was the need for the school to declare the results of all the classes on a single day ? Why not declare it classwise or batchwise ? Simple logic but which unfortunately flew over the heads of those running the affairs of the school. Moreover why weren’t the results declared online ? If CBSE, ICSE, NTA responsible for conducting Nationwide exams such as NEET, JEE, NET, just to name a few, have taken the online mode to declare results, why didn’t the school think of such a measure ? This commentary is not only about a particular, single school, but should concern all. Schools need to demonstrate that they think and are concerned about the convenience of the people, for this is about education and the values they impart to the young children will go a long way in moulding the future adult citizens of the land. Schools need to demonstrate that they impart education not only within the confines of a classroom but also mould the thought process of the young students and throwing traffic movement into disarray on the day exam results are declared is certainly not the way to go about it. The said school and the parents certainly need to demonstrate that such things will not happen in the coming days. This is what is expected of a place of learning. Or is it a case of the road conduct of the suited, booted class of people who inconvenience the people whenever they decide to zoom around Imphal on any given day infecting the thought process of everyone, including schools ?
