IMPHAL, Dec 24
The World Meetei Council (WMC), Manipur Unit conducted its ST campaign at Tokpaching Ching Macha, Pumlen Pat in Thoubal district today led by WMC Manipur Unit president Urikhinbam Kunjo Singh. Kunjo was attending the Quarter Final Match of the 17th State Level Football Tournament organised by Trio Memorial Trust as the chief guest, as per a press release. Accompanied by volunteers and football players, the gathering shouted slogans to the effect of "We want ST, the only constitutional safeguard to save Meeteis", "Save our future; only NRC, boundary fencing, ILPS, will not save Meeteis" and "Send the two reports for inclusion of Meeteis in ST list immediately".
Speaking on the occasion, Urikhinbam Kunjo said that the Meetei community, with a population of approximately 15 lakhs, can settle in only 6.5% of the State's total landmass, after discounting the areas occupied by lakes, roads, rivers etc.
Meanwhile, non-locals can also come and live in this tiny area which can cause scarcity of land resources for the indigenous Meeteis in the next few decades. Under such circumstances, inclusion of Meeteis in ST list is the only constitutional safeguard against such threats, he said.
NRC and boundary fencing may safeguard the geographical map of Manipur but such measures alone cannot save the Meetei community living within this map, he said.
