IMPHAL, Dec 26 : The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged all MLAs and representatives from every political party to attend tomorrow's important meeting on delimitation and the census at Lamyanba Shanglen.
Today, JFD held a discussion on the census at Moirangkampu Khewa Bazar in Imphal East.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, JFD convenor Jitendra Ningomba warned that a strong resolution might be passed against MLAs who fail to attend tomorrow's meeting.
He stressed that crucial resolutions regarding the census and delimitation will be discussed during the meeting and as such the participation of MLAs and political leaders is essential.
No census exercise should be carried out in Manipur until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) or a similar mechanism is implemented in the State, he said and clarified that the people of Manipur do not oppose the census itself, but the same should be conducted in the proper manner.
Sunil Karam, finance secretary of JFD, emphasised that the census should accurately reflect the ground reality of the areas concerned.
Stating that the situation in Manipur is not conducive for conducting the census, as the Meiteis and Kukis are still unable to enter each other's areas, he added that any attempt to carry out the census forcefully will be met with resistance.
Conducting the census without resolving the ongoing issues in Manipur would pave the way for refugees to be included in the citizens' list, he said and urged the Government to identify the illegal immigrants first before proceeding with the census operation.
