IMPHAL, Dec 27: "Chakhao Sana"--a new variety of high yielding black scented rice has been launched today.
The new HYV aromatic black rice was developed under the leadership of Professor Joykumar Meitei Laishram, Consultant Professor at Green Foundation and former Dean of College of Agriculture, CAU Iroishemba.
The HYV "Chakhao Sana" was released at a function held at the conference hall of the Green Foundation at Kwakeithel Awang Thiyam Leikai.
Former Dean of College of Agriculture, CAU Iroi-shemba, Professor N Iboton; Green Foundation chairman Ch Rajendra, AMAPCON president and National Awardee P Devakanta, progressive farmer Takhellambam Pulen Mangang from Keinou attended the launch event.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor N Iboton said the high yielding variety of Chakhao will benefit farmers of the State.
A super food, Chakhao is rich in antioxidants due to the presence of high concentration of anthocyanins. It boosts the immune system and also helps prevent cancer, Iboton said.
The quality of the chakhao grown here is best and is known all over the world, he added.
Progressive farmer Takhellambam Pulen Mangang, who has grown and produced chakhao for more than seven years, said Chakhao Sana is superior to other varieties in many aspects.
Chakhao Sana variety can be grown organically without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and it still produces high yield. Reduced dependence on fertilizers also makes it economic for farmers, he said.
Pulen encouraged farmers to grow Chakhao Sana.
