IMPHAL, Dec 27 : A revised notification issued by  the Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC) for the direct recruitment of 419 Assistant Professors across 22 subjects in Government colleges has sparked wide-spread concern among aspi- ring candidates and intel-lectuals due to significant changes in the eligibility criteria.
The key change in the revised notifications issued on December 19, 2025 is the replacement of the term 'concerned subject' in the educational and other qualifications with 'concerned/relevant/allied subject.'
This change allows candidates to apply for posi- tions in subjects they were not eligible as per the previous circular dated December 5, 2025.
Additionally, no written test will be conducted for the recruitment process as the candidates will be shortlisted for interviews based on their academic marks during the screening.
There is also no upper age limit either.
The notification also stated that the allied subjects will be specified as per the Manipur University office order dated September 12, 2025.
The circular issued on December 5 for the direct recruitment of Assistant Professors faced criticism for omitting certain subjects from the recruitment process.
While the revised notification has expanded eligi- bility, allowing candidates from a broader range of subjects to apply for positions in different fields, concerns about the quality of teaching have emerged.
The revised notification now allows students from one subject to apply for positions in other fields, raising questions about the impact on academic standards.
For instance, students of Home Science, Forensic Science, Public Health, Sociology, and Psychology are now eligible to apply for the seven vacant posts in Anthropology, as per the revised notification.
Similarly, Statistics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical/Mechanical/Aeronautical/Electronics/Computer Engineering, and Economics students can now apply for the 38 vacant posts in Mathematics.
This expanded eligibility applies to other subjects as well, with candidates from allied disciplines now able to apply for Assistant Professor posts in a variety of fields.
According to the revised notification, Home Science students, for instance, are eligible to apply for the seven vacant posts in Anthropology, 28 vacant posts in Education, and 29 vacant posts in Economics.
Moreover, the revised notification also does not clearly specify how seat allocation will be managed between candidates applying through allied subjects and those from the concerned subject.
Given the controversy surrounding the revised notification, questions may arise regarding whether candidates from allied subjects are more qualified than those who have cleared the NET and hold a PhD in the same subject, once the recruitment results are announced.
Some experts and intellectuals have suggested that the MPSC should issue a clear notification explaining how seat allocation will be handled to prevent the recruitment process from being questioned or challenged.
