Four suspects taken into custody

IMPHAL, Dec 28 : Police have taken four suspects into custody in connection with the suspicious death of Khaidem (Ongbi) Chaoba Devi, a 27-year-old housewife, at Thiyam Leishangkhong, Imphal West under the jurisdiction of Wangoi police station.
Husband of the deceased, Khaidem Nareshwor (son of Ingocha) and his mother Khaidem (Ongbi) Indira, both residents of Wangoi Mamang Khaidem Leikai, were arrested yesterday. Two others have also been arrested
They were produced before the Duty Magistrate of Imphal West, along with a request for a nine-day police custody remand for investigation of the case.
After hearing the prosecution's submission, the Duty Magistrate granted the request and remanded the two suspects in police custody till January 5.
The body of Chaoba Devi has been kept at the RIMS morgue since last night.
As of today, none of the family members have come forward to claim the body for her last rites.
Chaoba Devi was found dead under suspicious circumstances yesterday morning at Thiyam Leishangkhong.
She had gone missing on the night of December 26.
Meanwhile, a sit-in protest was held today at Iramsiphai Leirak Ashangba Community Hall, demanding the arrest of all people involved in the alleged killing of Chaoba Devi. The protest was organized by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), formed by the people of Iramsiphai, Chaoba Devi’s birthplace, in connection with the case.
Speaking to the media, JAC convenor S Sanajaoba stated that they suspect foul play in the death of Chaoba Devi, allegedly involving her husband and in-laws.
Urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the case against Chaoba's husband and mother-in-law, he added that the body will not be claimed until justice is served.
He also emphasised that the relevant authorities must take the case seriously and take necessary actions to address gender-based violence. A similar protest demonstration was also held at Wangoi Khaidem Leikai.
A late report said, police have arrested two more persons identified as Moirangthem Dhanajit (28) of Langathel Bazar (at present staying at Nongpok Keithelmanbi Awang Leikai) and Sh Kananbala Devi alias Dhaneshwori (41) of Yairipok Wangkhem in connection with the case.
