IMPHAL, Dec 29 : The more than 2-year-old conflict is not an armed Kuki aggression but a design by a powerful force to disintegrate Manipur, said RK Meghen, former rebel leader.
He said this in Tripura's Berimura during the unveiling of a statue of Bir Tikendrajit.
The event marked the 169th birth anniversary of Bir Tikendrajit and commemorated Chahi Taret Khuntakpa.
Speaking at the event, RK Meghen said what Manipur is facing at present is a powerful force that wants to destroy it, and reduce the strength of the Meitei community. To face this powerful foe, the Meitei as a community must stand united and take the courage of "our forefathers", he said. He said the value of democracy is being eroded, and the system is deliberately attempting to disintegrate the strength, culture and tradition of the Meiteis.
He said elections are also a part of the system that divides the people on party-line and affiliation.
To protect Manipur and the community, Meiteis living in the State and outside must unite as one, he said.
United Peoples' Front, Manipur (UPF) and Tripura Manipuri Student-Youth Co-ordination Committee (TMSYCCO) jointly organised the event. Floral tributes were paid to the statue of Bir Tikendrajit. A public convention was also held later at Panichai Mandap at Guchamura.
