IMPHAL, Dec 30 : The 87th anniversary of the historic Chinga Meepham was observed at the premises of Chingamathak College Road Youth Development Association, Imphal today.
Irawat Celebration Committee and Chinga Session Observation Committee jointly organised the observance.
Veteran CPI leader and former Minister Dr M Nara, CPI Manipur State Council secretary A Nabachandra, and many leaders of the party and civil societies attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr M Nara said the historic session of the Nikhil Hindu Manipuri Mahasabha also known as Chinga Meepham, led by Jananeta Irawat, was held on December 29 and 30, 1938.
During the session, Jananeta Irawat openly talked about the suffering of the people, and criticised the authoritarian rule under the British Raj and the King.
The session laid the foundation for a political and cultural movement and social reformation. Jananeta Irawat advocated for democracy, equality, and institution of educational institutions, Dr Nara said.
MB College's retired Vice Principal, Professor Sanasam Umananda said Jananeta Irawat was a patriot, a philosopher and a poet, and his contribution to the Manipuri society is immense.
Umananda said the Chinga Meepham helped bring about a movement that changed Manipur's political and social landscape.
87th Chinga Meepham Observation Committee convenor RK Amusana said Jananeta Irawat's ideology is becoming more relevant today with many beginning to trace the patriot's footsteps.
During the Chinga Meepham, Jananeta Irawat advocated for the welfare of the common people, labourers and farmers. He wanted democracy, and people to reap its benefits, Amusana said.
He openly spoke against the authoritarian rule of the colonial British and the king, he added.
Irawat advocated for democracy, but sadly, the State and the Central Government at present have eroded the value of democracy, Amusana said.
The BJP Government has so far failed to resolve the more than 2-year-old conflict in Manipur, he added.
Floral tributes were paid to the photo of Jananeta Irawat at the event.
