IMPHAL, Dec 29 : Calling upon Governor Ajay Kumar to take urgent action to reopen the two National Highways, the Indigenous People's Forum Manipur (IPFM) has threatened to seek legal remedy through the High Court of Manipur and organize peaceful and democratic public protests otherwise. Submitting a memorandum to the Governor, IPFM urged him to take immediate and decisive steps to ensure the safe and permanent reopening of the two National Highways and to guarantee uninterrupted movement of goods and people.
The representation bearing the signatures of IPFM chief advisor Ashang Kasar and general secretary Ramtahungbe drew the Governor's attention to the continued inaccessibility of the two National Highways which has caused immense hardship to the general public, including unavailability and price hikes of essential supplies including food, medicines, fuel, and other necessities.
Students, patients, traders and workers are all facing unprecedented difficulties, said the memo.
Asserting that the situation has not improved despite repeated appeals, it said the continued closure of these highways amounts to a denial of the people's fundamental rights to life, movement, and livelihood as guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
It has cautioned that if urgent action is not taken to address the issue, IPFM, along with the affected citizens, will launch public protests and seek appropriate legal remedy by approaching the High Court for protection of the Constitutional and humanitarian rights of the people.
