DGAR Polo Tournament underway at Mapal Kangjeibung

IMPHAL, Dec 5
The 2nd DGAR Men and Women’s Polo Tournament 2025 commenced today with great fervour at the iconic Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground, Imphal, the oldest polo ground in the world.
The tournament is organised by the Assam Rifles under its Civic Action Programme in collaboration with the All Manipur Polo Association (AMPA).
A total of 38 teams comprising 33 men and 5 women’s teams from across the region are participating in the tournament, which will continue till December 20, said PRO IGAR (S) in a press release.
Among the competing teams are three from Assam Rifles, including the Assam Rifles Women’s Polo Team, which was launched on  May 7, 2024.
Their participation reflects the organisation’s unwavering commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting sportsmanship among the youth, while honouring the rich cultural traditions of Manipur, it said.
The opening ceremony was graced by Major General Ravroop Singh, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), as the chief guest.  He was joined by Lt Gen (Dr) Konsam Himalay, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), and Dr Konsam Saratchandra, president, AMPA. Their presence underscored Manipur’s enduring legacy as the birthplace of modern polo and its deep-rooted equestrian heritage, it said. it said.
The event witnessed an enthusiastic turnout of approximately 2,000 spectators, including students from Sainik School, Imphal and NCC cadets.
The Assam Rifles Pipe Band enthralled the audience with a spirited performance, adding ceremonial grandeur to the occasion, it said.
The opening day of the tournament saw Ibudhou Pakhangba Polo Club crush MPSC by 14-0 margin in the women’s opener before Tentha Polo Club beat Khurai Polo Club by 3-2 goals in the men’s opener.
