IMPHAL, Dec 7: The Government's resettlement plan for internally displaced persons, if dragged on, may trigger unrest and deepen the present crisis, said MA Chesaba, acting president of the Manipur Meitei-Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO).
He was speaking at the organisation's 15th foundation day celebration at Hotel Castle, Palace Compound today when he made the statement.
Retired MU Professor Dr Naorem Joykumar, Assistant Professor (DM Uni- versity) Dr Syed Ahmed, Impact TV Chief Editor Yumnam Rupachandra and United Mothers' Organisation president Moirangthem Sorojini among others attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, MA Chesaba noted the achievements of the MMWO as an organisation.
He also commented on the present crises facing Manipur, and asserted that the Centre and the State Government must implement a concrete plan to allow resettlement of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying in relief camps.
The Government has so far failed to effectively implement resettlement of the IDPs. This is very unfortunate, he said.
If the process for resettlement drags on and is delayed, it may trigger widespread unrest and deepen the crisis, he added.
Notably, the State recently formed committees to effect resettlement of IDPs. Earlier it had announced that the resettlement for all IDPs except for some from a few places will be completed by December 2025.
On issues facing the Manipuri society, MA Chesaba stressed that there are people trying to incite religious and communal conflicts, and social media has been used as a platform and a tool by such people.
He said social media users must refrain from sharing and uploading posts that may incite hatred for a particular community or religion.
No issues or incidents must be given a communal or religious tinge. People must exercise restraint and not take law into their own hands. Conflicts or issues may be resolved peacefully with dialogues between parties and stakeholders concerned, he added.
The people, collectively, must take responsibility to restore peace in Manipur and protect its integrity. The Meitei-Pangal community has produced brave sons and daughters who have fought for the motherland and will protect every inch of Manipur's territory, Chesaba said.
