IMPHAL, Dec 7 : A large number of Leitanpokpi villagers staged a protest rally today against what they claim to be illegal construction of a road on Leitanpokpi Hill allegedly by Kuki militants.
The protest rally organised by the Young Sporting Club, VDC and Meira Paibis of Leitanpokpi was participated by a large number of villagers, mostly women.
The rally started from the village ground and the villagers marched with banners and placards through the ring road, and concluded at the starting point.
Speaking to media persons, village secretary Waikhom Naoba said that they have repeatedly raised the issue of the unauthorised construction of road on top of Leitanpokpi Hill by Kuki militants with various State authorities including the Governor, the Chief Secretary and officials of the district administration.
However, there has been no positive response so far, Naoba said. “We have urged the authorities several times but our concerns remain unaddressed. Construction of the particular road poses a serious threat to our village. Moreover, the area through which the road is being constructed is a part of reserved forest”, he said.
The village secretary said that they would continue their agitation until the Government addresses their concerns and ensures the protection of their village land and surrounding areas. The villagers have also appealed to the State Government to intervene immediately and prevent any encroachment or unauthorised activities on Leitanpokpi Hill.
