IMPHAL, Dec 7: Singjamei Meepham today has strengthened resolve to protect and promote indigenous culture and traditions.
Locals, Meira Paibis, members of 11 youth clubs and 9 localities of Singjamei took part in the Singjamei Meepham today that reaffirmed resolutions taken by the Enat Yokhatpa Luptin (EYOL), Manipur.
Eikhoigee Club  hosted the Meepham (meeting) at Oinam Thingel Lairembi Lampak.
At the meeting, Eikhoi-gee Club secretary general, Oinam Prabin Khuman said the identity and aesthetics of many indigenous rituals, culture and traditions have been threatened by outside influence, adoption of new and unwanted practices and changes.
In a trend that maligns the original tradition, culture, and puts undue pressure on the rest of the society, many are spending extravagant amounts of money in rituals including wedding ceremonies and adopting alien practices. Such a trend puts pressure on ordinary families and affects their economy, Prabin said.
The Singjamei Meepham was organised to familiarise people with the resolutions taken in EYOL's August 10, 2024 conference organised at City Convention Centre, Imphal.
The conference took resolutions to protect and promote the original identity and aesthetics of indigenous rituals, culture and traditions, Prabin said.
At the Singjamei Meepham today, the people resolved to stand against the trends of cutting cakes on Heijingpot, exchange of rings, high end photo sessions, musicals, dance and Thabal Chongba in wedding ceremony and use of intoxicants.
The people further resolved to use Phijang Phee only in the Mandap area and restrict the trend of "Bhabok Mamai Taba".
They also resolved to promote the use of local  products in all cultural and traditional rituals.
