Imphal, Dec 7 : The fifth district level Chatric Sibhathei (king chilli) festival will be held at Chatric village, Kamjong district on December 10 and 11 under the aegis of Khokpei Horticulture Cooperative Society Limited, Chatric village.
The festival is supported by NEC, Ministry of DoNER, Planning Department and Eastern Border Areas Development Authority (EBADA).
Speaking to media persons at his Lamphelpat quarters today, MLA K Leishiyo said it’s time to let the world know that the famous U-Morok (king chilli) originated from Chatric village.
He also appealed to one and all to come and join the festival.
He said that the term ‘indigenous’ does not apply to people alone but it is also applicable to plants as well as animals.
There is an ancient folklore which says that U-Morok originated from Chatric village, Leishiyo said.
According to folklore, one Rapua, a resident of Chatric village, brought U-Morok and U-Morok plants from Ango Hills. Rapua planted the U-Morok  plant at Chatric. From Chatric, the unique chilli variety spread to different regions.
There is also a story on how king Kullachandra named the chilli U-Morok.
Later, when Britishers came to Manipur, they named the particular chilli variety King Chilli, Leishiyo said.
Nagaland obtained the GI tag for King Chilli in 2008 and the unique chilli was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, he said. Saying that U-Morok is now used in manufacturing several industrial products including cosmetics and mob control sprays, the MLA called upon the Government and the people to take up U-Morok plantation on commercial scale for economic growth. Festival organising committee convenor Ngahanpam Haorei said that U-Morok is the principal source of income for Chatric villagers. All the expenses of a family including educational expenses of children are borne with the income earned from U-Morok plantation, he said. He also invited one and all to come to the festival.
