IMPHAL, Dec 8 : Rampant Southern Sporting Union (SSU), Singjamei beat MIUFC, Mayang Imphal by a slender 1-0 margin to become runaway league leaders of the 3rd Premier League on 34 points.
The lone goal that earned SSU all three points today at SSC ground in Sekta was scored by Wahengbam Jack in the 30th minute.
It was the 11th eleventh win for SSU in the 15-team tournament in 13 matches and eventually took an unassailable 34-point lead with a match left to play against SSC.
Later in the day, United Chandel Football Club (UCFC) beat Rising Athletic Union (RAU), Lairikyengbam Leikai in a 5-goal thriller for the 7th win in 12th matches that included 2 draws.
The two sides were locked at 2-2 following a competitive start until Ahong Khiang Chothe who came off the bench after 66 minutes scored the winner two minutes into the stoppage time.
UCFC enjoyed a slender 1-0 first half lead courtesy of Yumnam Simon Peter’s 24th minute strike before RAU drew level at the stroke of the hour-mark thanks to Chongtham Raj.
The parity did not last long as UCFC regained the lead within three minutes as Yulhung Sonam Chothe found the lead.
RAU also fought back and came to level terms yet again when Md Sohail who subbed in for N Quintan after the restart netted the equaliser in the 71st minute.
When the two sides looked to settle the game in a 2-2 draw, Ahong Khiang Chothe converted a fine chance during the stoppage time and snatched the late win for the Chandel outfit.
With the win, United Chandel FC went third on 23 points in the teams’ standing behind runaway leaders SSU and second placed AIM, Khabam (who share same points but have better goal difference).
