IMPHAL, Dec 9 : A month-long National Reconsolidation Month was launched today at Manipur Press Club at Majorkhul.
Organized by the United Peoples' Front (UPF), Manipur under the theme "Eikhoi Amuk Khuntaklaroishi", the event commenced with the symbolic lighting of a fire from the sacred Kangla Lanban, followed by a rally to the Manipur Press Club.
The launch function was graced by Naorem Joykumar, former Professor of History at Manipur University, as chief guest and UPF president Nongthombam Rupachandra as president.
Advisors to UPF Khomdram Ratan, L Jadumani, YK Dhiren, and W Second were the guests of honour.
Addressing the event, Rupachandra announced that busts of Manipur's bravehearts will be unveiled in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur and a gathering of the Manipur diaspora will begin in Redlands, Shillong on December 19 as part of a month-long programme.
He also said that a two-wheeler rally will be held on January 6 in the valley districts of Manipur.
On January 8, a street-corner meeting, public gathering, and poster campaign will take place, he said and added that the main event of the month-long programme will be held on January 9 at the memorial complex of Maharaj Gambhir Singh at Langthabal.
Meanwhile, UPF general secretary S Anil stated that Manipur which existed as a sovereign kingdom for centuries, experienced widespread displacement during the Seven Years' Devastation (1819-1826) at the hands of Awa (now Myanmar) due to disunity among the royal families.
He continued that Manipur regained its sovereignty after Maharaj Gambhir Singh and his brother Nara Singh, who had fled to Cachar, led a resistance against the Burmese with British support.
Descendants of many Manipuris who fled the kingdom during that tumultuous period continue to settle in places like Tekhao (Assam), Takhel (Tripura), and several other regions, he noted.
Saying that the British began working to transfer Kabaw Tampak to Awa in 1834, Anil maintained that the "Agreement Regarding Compensation for the Kabaw Valley, 1834" was signed between the British and Awa, without consulting the King of Manipur.
He said that Maharaja Gambhir Singh was unable to confront the British, as he had relied on their assistance to regain Manipur's sovereignty.
Tragically, Maharaj Gambhir Singh passed away on January 9, 1834, before the agreement was signed, he said and added that the UPF has been observing the day (January 9) as National Reconsolidation Day since 2001 and later changed to National Reconsolidation Month.
Stating that Manipur is currently experiencing widespread displacement due to the violent campaign of Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists, he urged all indigenous people to unite to safeguard the future of Manipur.
