IMPHAL, Dec 9: Serious concerns were raised at a women’s convention held today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Konung Lampak.
The theme of the convention held as a part of the observance of 16 days of Activism  against Gender based Violence Against Women and Girls was “United to End Digital Violence Against All Women    and Girls”.
Retired District and Session Judge A Noutuneshwari, All Tribal Women Organisation (ATWO) president Moikham Ronglo, United Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation (UMMWDO) president Anwari Noorjahan and Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary Sobita Mangsatabam attended the convention as presidium members.
The convention was jointly organised by Sinnaibi Self Help Group, United Women Rights Defenders, Watch Group on Violence Against Women, Christian Network of Positive Women, Village Women Coordinating Committee and ATWO.
Kshetrimayum Sapna of United Women Rights Defenders said that the convention was organised as a part of the 16 days of Activism  against Gender based Violence Against Women and Girls which is observed from November 25 to December 10 every year.
Following years of mass movement and agitation by several CSOs, NGOs, student organisations and Meira Paibis, women commission, separate women Court and separate women police station have been set up but crimes against women and children have been going on unabated, Sapna said.
Although there is President’s Rule in the State at present, violence and crimes against women are reported every now and then, she said.
Police are still unable to establish the facts and circumstances leading to the killing of physiotherapist Dr Rita at her own home at Yaiskul which is located quite close to Imphal police station, she said.
Another woman named Tenden was hacked to death by a relative at Khurai Thoudam Leikai in the most brutal manner, she mentioned.
If justice is not done to all these cases, many more such cases will emerge in the future, Sapna said.
She said that the convention was organised to study how such cases can be prevented and enable women and children live with freedom.
