Assam Rifles honours fallen bravehearts

IMPHAL, Dec 8: Assam Rifles organised two solemn Wreath Laying Ceremonies on December 7 & 8, 2025 to honour the supreme sacrifices of Rifleman (Late) Rakesh Singh and Rifleman (Late) Lapka Damdum, whose valour and devotion to duty remain a source of inspiration for all ranks of the Force.
According to a release issued by the IGAR (South), a ceremony on December 7 was held at Battalion Headquarters Modi to pay homage to Rifleman Rakesh Singh, who laid down his life in the line of duty on December 7, 2001.
Serving with Headquarters Company, he was part of the Quick Reaction Team that was mobilised following intelligence inputs about armed insurgents hiding in a nearby village. As the team approached the location, they came under heavy and indiscriminate fire. Rifleman Rakesh Singh displayed exceptional courage and presence of mind, retaliating with accurate fire to suppress the enemy and provide cover to his comrades.
Despite sustaining grievous injuries, he continued to engage the insurgents until he succumbed to his wounds, making the supreme sacrifice while upholding the highest traditions of Assam Rifles and the Indian Armed Forces.
The ceremony witnessed the participation of 150 officials and troops, who paid homage by laying wreaths and presenting a Guard of Honour.
On December 8, Assam Rifles conducted another solemn ceremony at Tengnoupal to honour Rifleman Lapka Damdum, who made the supreme sacrifice on December 8, 1956 during an operation against Naga insurgents at Longkhim, Tuensang in Nagaland.
Rifleman Damdum displayed raw courage and determination in the face of heavy enemy fire, fearlessly engaging the insurgents until he sustained fatal injuries. His sacrifice remains etched in golden letters in the proud history of the Force.
The ceremony was attended by 113 officials and troops, who paid homage by laying wreaths and presenting a Guard of Honour, collectively remembering his devotion to duty and comradeship.
Both ceremonies reflected the deep respect of Assam Rifles towards its fallen Bravehearts and reaffirmed the organisation’s unwavering commitment to honour their selfless service and supreme sacrifice.
